The Redwood

    Still True To Its

          Mission

While Newport is home to more than a few "gems," the Redwood Library and Athenaeum stands out as one that has never strayed from its core commitment to the "good of Mankind."  The Redwood was founded in 1747 and opened its doors to the public in 1750.  It is the oldest lending library in America in continuous use and has grown through the centuries thanks to the vision of its founders and that of its stewards.  Today the Redwood offers an unequalled collection of rare and selectively acquired books, top quality lectures, exhibitions, displays of fine and decorative arts, performances, seminars, debates and other educational activities for the enjoyment and enrichment of its members and the general public.  And unlike other collections, it is all housed in one of Newport's oldest and most significant buildings.  A true "gem."

Invest in the redwood's future

As Redwood supporters and visitors know, to walk into the Athenaeum is to take a step back in time and to feel that one is part of the lisving history of Newport.  This unparalleled experience, however, is only made possible thanks to the generous spport of the Redwood's donors.  Your belief in the its importance has been critical to its continued growth and success and your renewed belief and support is needed to take the Redwood into the future.

You are invited to join The Legacy of Excellance Campaign and to help secure the future of the Redwood Library and Athenaeum.  A goal of $7 million has been established.  Of this amount, $4 million will help strengthen the endowment, $2 million will retire the remaining debt from our restoration and expansion campaign, and $1 million will help meet the Redwood's archival and rare book storage needs.

The vision of Abraham Redwood and 45 other leading citizens of Newport remains with us today as the Redwood Library and Athenaeum continues to fulfill its 1747 mission of makingknowledge and useful learning as lasting and widespread as possible.

The Redwood holds a unique place in Newport's ongoing history and in the hearts and minds of its steadfast supporters and leaders.  With your generous participation, together we can meet the challenges ahead for generations to come.

Achieving our $7 million goal will truly be a legacy of excellence left for our future generations.

Inquiries about the campaign and for donating can be made to the Redwood's Development Office at 401 - 847-0295 ext. 115.

We thank you for your support and for making a difference in the future of this historic American library.
