Restoration Project:

Delivery Room Section

The most frequented space in the Library, the Delivery Room, dated 1875,
is in need of significant expansion and repair.

The Delivery Room takes its name from its function as the circulation area where books are delivered to and from the members. Its attachment to the main entrance makes this the most frequented space in the Library. However, despite its beauty, it is in significant need of repair. Currently, several massive architectural cornices have separated from their structural anchors and are presently stabilized through the use of temporary 2 x 4 braces. In addition, the connected staff offices are crowded and don't allow for a proper research facility.

One of the most ambitious components of the Redwood's restoration plans takes place here, with the introduction of a state-of-the-art below-grade addition created on a south axis to the 1875 Delivery Room. The addition will house archives and book stacks (relocated from the Perry / McBean section) in the consistent and controlled climate essential to collections preservation. The addition will provide for a secure gallery area, ADA compliant facilities, and a well-lit, cheerful reading room.

External changes to the building will be minimal. The south wing of the Delivery Room Section, which currently houses staff, will provide passage to the addition and be itself converted into a gallery. A new south exit will increase public safety, and open onto a reading terrace, giving direct access to the famed John Russell Pope allče.
