CONDITION:
-
Mounted all corners verso. Paper and adhesive residues corners and center
side edges are evidence of previous mounting.
-
Very discolored overall. Severe brown liquid staining of unknown origin
verso has migrated to recto. Especially disfiguring as spots across subject's
forehead, arms, chest and shoulders.
-
Very dirty verso.
-
Diagonal creases bisect support through center of sheet.
|
TREATMENT:
-
Dry-cleaned verso with Magic Rub vinyl eraser.
-
Float-washed 4 times in slightly alkaline deionized water (pH 8.0, calcium
hydroxide added) to reduce discoloration as far as possible. 3% reagent-grade
hydrogen peroxide applied by brush to liquid stains recto and verso to
reduce, then exposed to filtered sunlight whilst wet. Peroxide rinsed from
paper by bathing 3 times as above until negative oxidation indicated by
potassium iodide-starch test paper.
-
After air-drying humidified, then straightened under light pressure between
sheets of smooth matboard and foam.
