CONDITION:  Very dirty recto and verso. Gray-blue smudging left upper margin.  Moderately discolored recto and verso. Waterstains right lower and upper right margins. Light foxing left margin. Verso brown staining is offsetting from the adjacent image in the book.  A 4.5 cm tear lower edge 13 cm from left edge; 9 mm tear right edge 5.9 cm from lower edge. 7 small tears and 6 binding holes along upper edge. Dog-eared left corners. Loss lower right corner 4 x 16 mm.  Badly creased and folded upper and lower margins.

TREATMENT: 

1. Lightly dry-cleaned in blank areas recto and overall verso with Magic Rub vinyl eraser. 
2. Bathed 4 times in slightly alkaline deionized water (calcium hydroxide added, pH 8.0) to reduce discoloration as far as possible. Exposed to filtered sunlight whilst wet to further reduce foxing and stains recto and verso. 
3. Mended tears verso with thin Japanese tissue and wheat starch paste. 
4. Humidified, then straightened out under light pressure between heavy-weight blotters.
