Frans van den Wyngaerde (1614 - 1669)
Vani Capricci di Cornelis Schut
The drawings by Schut (1597 - 1655) were engraved
by Wyngaerde in the 17th century. The original metal plates were later
reprinted as they are seen here. The small volume from which this plate
comes is an entity in and of itself and includes various restrikes from
a variety of earlier plates. Such collections were not unusual in the 18th
and 19th century, but relatively few of them survive intact. The binding
is earlier than the other scrapbook bindings, lending credence to the suggestion
that King acquired the volume as a unit.
8¾" x 10"
Sketches of Animals and Trees.
"Phila Pubd and sold wholesale
by W. Charles, 1812. Price 50 cents."
This is an unusual American plate book, with only
five plates (it may be incomplete). The images, very freely etched, are
unsigned. Not listed in Sabin.

Constantine Addressing
His Troops.
Marten-Jacobsz van Veen, called Heemskerk (1498 - 1574).
Pen and brown ink and wash.
Based on a fresco in the Vatican, that was based
on a drawing or design by Raphael (1483-1520). The drawing is securely
mounted onto heavy cream paper with black border and is neither badly discolored
nor brittle. It is a good example of an object in the collection whose
condition is sufficiently stable to require no treatment.
